Community Support Enriches Education- Grants Exceed $7,000 for School Projects

Public school students benefit each year from generous donations to the Community Foundation of Frederick County. This year, grants from the Gifts for Education Frederick County Public Schools Endowment Fund and the Franklin and Bess Gladhill Fund for Agriculture Education are supporting student enrichment projects at 17 schools to the tune of more than $7,000.

      Receiving grants from the Gifts for Education Fund:

Brunswick Elementary— $500 for a Reading Rocks literacy program that provides each student four books for swapping throughout the school year and summer

Heather Ridge?$370 to purchase materials for a Quilts for Kids service-learning project

Lincoln Elementary?$500 for a LEGO Robotics Engineering after-school program

Middletown Primary?$330 to continue a student gardening project

Monocacy Elementary?$500 to purchase magnifying glasses and world globes for an Evening in the Park event

Parkway Elementary?$500 for a Parkway Ambassadors mentoring program

Tuscarora Elementary?$440 for an Environmental Club field trip to the Merrill Environmental Center on the Chesapeake Bay

Walkersville Middle?$485 for a MathCounts subscription to support team competitions

Receiving grants from the Gladhill Fund for Agriculture Education:

Career & Technology Center and Catoctin High—$400 to each school to support travel to the national FFA convention in Indianapolis

Frederick and Tucarora High?$350 to each school to support travel to the national FFA convention

Green Valley Elementary?$740 to help fund Mobile Agriscience and Mobile Aquatics Lab visits

Middletown High?$250 to help fund flags, FFA convention booth supplies and registration

Oakdale Middle?$400 for Crops and Critters agriculture activities

Orchard Grove Elementary?$600 toward farm and orchard field trips

Urbana High?$300 toward an Urbana feeder schools Horsemanship Clinic

Urbana Middle?$250 for Gardening Club activities

            FCPS welcomes tax-deductible donations through The Community Foundation of Frederick County, which has distributed over $112,000 in more than 200 grants since the endowments were launched in 1998.  Anyone wishing to donate may call 301-696-6800. The next round of grants is in September 2011.
