City Manager David J. Deutsch announced today that Dwayne A. Preston will become Deputy Chief of the Bowie Police Department, after 21 years with the Prince George’s County Police Department.


Preston comes to the City with a wide array of experience in police operations, having moved up through the ranks; beginning as a patrol officer, and serving as Community Oriented Policing Coordinator, Lieutenant Commander, Major Narcotics Section, Assistant Commander Criminal Investigations Division, and Commander of District VI (Beltsville).  He is currently Deputy Chief for the Bureau of Administration within the County Police Department. In this capacity he oversees the Bureau of Administration, which includes Personnel, the Training Academy, Fiscal Management and Risk Management and he supervises commanders of the Criminal Investigations, Narcotic Enforcement, Forensic Services and Special Investigations Divisions.


“Preston’s excellent and varied experience within the Prince George’s County Police Department and his focus there on building community partnerships were key factors in his selection,” said City Manager David Deutsch. “We are delighted that he will be joining our young department and are confident that he will enhance the strong partnership that we have with the Prince George’s County Police in keeping our community safe.”


Dwayne Preston resides in Fort Washington, Maryland.  He graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School and holds a BS in Accounting from Bowie State University and an MBA from the University of Maryland, University College.  Mr. Preston will assume his new duties on January 3, 2012.
