In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln, looking for ways to unite the nation during the Civil War, declared the last Thursday of November as a national day of Thanksgiving. A special exhibit at the visitor center will explore how Thanksgiving was celebrated in the midst of the Civil War. 8:30am-5pm

New Chesapeake Conservation Corps Program Kicks Off Inaugural

Earlier this year the Maryland Legislature enacted and Governor O’Malley signed into law a bill establishing the Chesapeake Conservation Corps Program within the Chesapeake Bay Trust.  The purpose of the Corps Program is to promote and sustain the environment by providing young adults with opportunities to gain career skills and become more engaged citizens through meaningful service to their communities.  In total, 16 watershed organizations, county governments, and environmental nonprofits throughout Maryland have been matched with a “Corps Volunteer” who will provide environmental outreach and stewardship assistance while also receiving leadership and technical training over the course of the year.

The Trust will unveil its Chesapeake Conservation Corps Program at an orientation session and press conference with its legislative partners, corporate supporters and representatives from the following Corps program host organizations:

No Tricks – Just Treats As Kids 12 And Under Celebrate Halloween A Little Early

IHOP restaurants in the DC area will celebrate Halloween a little early this year, offering kids 12 and under a free Scary Face Pancake as part of a national No Tricks – Just Treats program designed to provide kids with a safe and fun Halloween event.  The “design-your-own” Scary Face Pancake includes an oversized signature buttermilk pancake with a whipped topping mouth and strawberry nose, served with two mini OREO® cookies and candy corn on the side to allow kids to create their own Halloween hotcake. 

IHOP wants to provide trick or treaters with a safe and fun Halloween celebration that they can enjoy with friends and family as part of the company’s ongoing effort to give something back to the communities in which it operates.

19th Annual Awards Ceremony

On Friday, October 16th the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Citizen Advisory Committee hosted the 19th Annual Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Awards Ceremony. The event was held at the Mt. Pleasant Ruritan Club in Walkersville. Many friends and family members of award recipients attended the ceremony along with several special guests to include former Frederick County Sheriffs Robert C. Snyder and Carl Harbaugh, Frederick County Commissioner Blaine Young and Frederick County Emergency Communications Director Chip Jewell.
