This November, in recognition of National Epilepsy Awareness Month, the Epilepsy Foundation challenges America to Get Seizure Smart! This nationwide epilepsy public awareness campaign sets out to educate America about epilepsy and seizure first aid.

More than 50 organizations have already signed on as National Epilepsy Awareness Month partners .  USA Network will air the Epilepsy Foundation’s national public service announcement as part of their Characters Unite campaign and Discovery Health Network will include the www.GetSeizureSmart.org  link on their website to promote the partnership and encourage their visitors to participate in the campaign. Other partners taking the challenge include the National Brain Tumor Society, Navy Federal Credit Union, Cyberonics and Lundbeck.

This year’s theme, Get Seizure Smart, calls for Americans to learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of a seizure and know how to respond if someone is having a seizure. The campaign website, www.GetSeizureSmart.org, features downloadable fact sheets, short videos and other resources to help people recognize a seizure and know how to respond. Supporters can test their knowledge by taking the interactive online Get Seizure Smart quiz. Throughout the month, The Epilepsy Foundation’s nationwide network of affiliates is coordinating events around the country to educate local communities about epilepsy.

The Foundation is using Facebook, Twitter, and eCommunities to mobilize parents, friends, family and caregivers to take action with the 30 Ways in 30 Days challenge. For everyday in November, supporters will find out how to engage their own communities to help spread the word.

The Epilepsy Foundation has celebrated National Epilepsy Awareness Month since 1969. In 2003, Congress passed a formal resolution declaring November as National Epilepsy Awareness Month.

National Epilepsy Awareness Month launches November 1, 2011. Visit www.GetSeizureSmart.org to get more information about National Epilepsy Awareness Month or to become a partner.
