Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) won the 2011 Business Health Award in the large company category.  The FMH Development Council Business and Industry Committee and the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce sponsor the awards to recognize extraordinary commitment to health and wellness in the workplace.  The award, presented last night, acknowledges the vision and commitment FCPS demonstrates to provide innovative health and wellness programs for employees.

At the awards ceremony, FCPS was particularly commended for recruiting “wellness champions” to educate and motivate employees through wellness events at each school and building. Events have included fitness and walking challenges, on-site flu shot clinics, health screenings and exercise classes, brown-bag lunches with nutrition experts and e-mail newsletters about health topics.

Also noted were the school system’s employee benefits such as Nurseline, a toll-free number to call for round-the-clock medical information. If an employee has a concern in the middle of the night about his or her health, a child running a fever or any family member’s well-being, there is a registered nurse available to answer medical questions, 24/7.  Additional employee benefits include a healthy pregnancy program with coverage for an extra dental cleaning and exam during pregnancy, numerous online resources, expanded services for elder assistance, financial and legal services, prescription services and more.

The school system’s Human Resources executive director Paula Lawton, senior benefits manager Colette Baker and benefits specialist Linda Stout accepted the award on behalf of all FCPS wellness champions and staff who work to provide excellent employee health benefits.
