Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) achieved the system’s highest SAT college admissions test participation ever recorded and a major increase from prior years. According to results that Educational Testing Services released last week, 67% of FCPS seniors took the SAT during their high school years.

Local students also continue to score well above the state and national averages. The average combined mean score for FCPS seniors in the 2010-11 school year is 1545, exceeding Maryland’s combined score—1492—and the nation’s combined score—1500.

Although mean scores are marginally lower across the nation, part of the decline is attributable to a change in reporting by the College Board. Traditionally, reporting included only those seniors who tested through March of their senior year. The College Board is now adding seniors who tested the first time in May or June of their senior year. The College Board explains that the lower mean scores can be attributed to “late-starting” test takers who, on average, have lower scores.

For the fifth consecutive year, all FCPS 10th-grade students will take the PSAT, a preliminary test that introduces students to the testing format and prepares them for the SAT.  Since 1997, FCPS has also offered an optional course to prepare students for the SAT. This course and others like it are part of the school system’s efforts to continually improve academic performance and ensure all students have access to challenging coursework that will prepare them for success beyond graduation.

The SAT is a program of the College Board, which the Educational Testing Service of New Jersey develops and administers to measure critical reading, writing and math skills.  The scores—in conjunction with students’ transcripts and other measures of performance—assist many colleges and universities in selecting students for admission. Because the SAT is an elective test, results do not reflect the performance of all students.  However, the trend in SAT scores is a useful criterion for assessing district and school performance.
