Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) is among an elite group of award winners as a Gold “Start! Fit-Friendly Company,” according to the American Heart Association’s (AHA’s) chief executive officer Nancy Brown in correspondence to Superintendent Dr. Terry Alban.  This is the fourth consecutive year FCPS has won the AHA gold award for progressive leadership in making employee health and wellness a priority.

As a gold-level award recipient, FCPS has taken important steps to promote a wellness culture by providing support to employees and implementing physical, nutritional and cultural changes, says Ms. Brown.  According to the AHA, adult Americans spend a majority of their waking hours at work, and many are in sedentary careers. A key element of the AHA recognition program is a national movement that calls on all Americans and their employers to create a culture of physical activity and health to live longer, heart-healthier lives through walking.

FCPS has volunteer wellness champions at every building to coordinate wellness activities.  Past events have included fitness and  walking challenges, on-site flu shot clinics, health screenings and exercise classes, brown-bag lunches with nutrition experts and e-mail newsletters about health topics.

The school system’s senior benefits manager Colette Baker oversees the program and says, “I commend every employee who has stepped up to provide leadership and those who have participated in workplace wellness activities.  It is gratifying to win recognition for improving the quality of employees’ lives at work and beyond. When the economy is strained and staff goes several years without any cost-of-living adjustment, one way we have succeeded in making a positive difference for employees is through our work to negotiate excellent benefits. Ultimately teachers and all education professionals serve students best when we are healthy and at our best.”
